When and what to do?
Entry & foreign registration
Within 14 days after arrivalGet your alien registration card within 14 days after arrival.
Automatic health insurance enrollment
From day one at work, you're automatically enrolled as an employee in health insurance.
Japanese health insurance adjustment
If you keep Japanese health insurance (Kokumin Kenkō Hoken), check for duplicate coverage.
Monthly premium deduction
Premium is automatically deducted from salary. Company pays half.
Pension integration when you go back
Under the Korea‑Japan social security agreement (since 2005), you can combine Korean and Japanese pension periods.

Pension integration (通算)
You can add Korean pension time to Japan's pension under the Korea-Japan Social Security Agreement (2005~).
Similar structure to Japan.
Korea NHIS is similar to Japan's health insurance. You pay 30%, company pays half.
Medical indemnity insurance Tier A.
E-7 is Tier A. You can join any insurer's medical indemnity.
Tax treaty applies.
The Korea-Japan tax treaty prevents double taxation.
Please note
You can get NHIS exemption if you keep Japan health insurance.
If you keep Japan health insurance, you can apply for NHIS exemption. But Korean NHIS gives good coverage for the fee, so most people join NHIS and cancel Japan insurance.
Pension totalization needs a separate application.
Totalization isn’t automatic. After returning, apply at the Japan pension office (年金事務所) with Korean contribution records.
