What’s Korean KF certification? KF80·KF94·KF99 differences at a glance
KF stands for ‘Korean Filter’. It’s the mask standard certified by MFDS.
The number after KF shows filtration rate. Higher number blocks smaller particles better.
When dust is ‘bad’ or worse, use KF94. KF80 is fine on ‘moderate’ days.
PM2.5 is ultra‑fine dust ≤2.5 µm, about 1/30 of a hair’s width.
It reaches deep lungs and is harmful. Levels rise especially in spring.

How to pick kids’/small masks — guide for immigrant parents
Kids should wear MFDS‑certified KF80 or KF94 child masks. Adult masks won’t fit well.
If no child size, use adult Small (S) size. Look for ‘Small’ on the packaging.
After wearing, check that jaw and side of nose seal. If a finger fits, air leaks.
Mask can block breathing. Keep babies indoors.
Can you reuse KF94? Proper care & storage
Officially, KF94 is single‑use. But if not dirty, 2–3 reuses are okay.
Don’t wash with water or disinfectant. Filter performance drops fast.
After use, store in a breathable bag. If shape changes or nose wire bends, toss it.
If the inside smells or the shape collapses, get a new mask.
Check real‑time dust levels — 3 apps good for foreigners
Knowing dust level helps decide mask use. Here are apps with English support.
PM2.5: Bad = 36~75 µg/m³, Very Bad = ≥76 µg/m³.
If PM2.5 ≥35 µg/m³, we recommend KF94.
IQAir (AirVisual) — top pick
Has English UI. Shows real‑time air quality worldwide. Search ‘IQAir’ or ‘AirVisual’ in the app store.
AirKorea (airkorea.org.kr)
Official data from Korean Ministry of Environment. Site can switch to English. Gives the most accurate Korean stats.
Today’s Weather app (KMA)
KMA app also shows dust info. You can see weather and dust forecast together.
Spring yellow dust vs dust — can one mask block both?
Yellow dust is sand from China/Mongolia deserts. Mostly PM10+ large particles. Happens often March‑May.
PM2.5 is pollution from cars, factories, power plants. Smaller and more harmful than yellow dust.
KF94 blocks both yellow dust and PM2.5 well. In spring they can appear together.
Stay indoors as much as possible. If you must go out, wear KF94.
When you get home, wash hands and face.
